Housewarming Ceremony Photoshoot in Bangalore: A Villa Story
Documentary Family Photography Across Bangalore and Delhi NCR
Earlier this year, I photographed a housewarming ceremony at a beautiful villa on the outskirts of Bangalore. The day started with a cow and her calf being brought into the new home, fed and blessed for purity and prosperity. It is a small part of the whole ceremony, but it always ends up being one of the most memorable and it set a nice tone for the rest of the day.
The ceremony itself went through a full set of traditional Hindu rituals, starting with the dwar pooja, then the cow and calf being brought in and fed, followed by the havan and milk boiling, poornahuti, and finally nazar utaarna to close things out. My job was to cover all of these rituals properly, while also keeping an eye out for the smaller moments and expressions happening around them. It is not one or the other, I try to give equal attention to both the rituals and the candid moments in between.
One thing that really stood out was that the ceremony was conducted by a woman priest, Mrs Brahmaramba. She had a strong command over the mantras and led every ritual clearly, which made the whole event feel inclusive from start to finish.
M herself is a classical singer, and she sang bhajans through some of the smaller ceremonies during the day, like the milk boiling, which added something extra to those moments.
The kids at the event were fully part of things, moving in and out of the rituals, curious about everything going on and that energy added a lot of life to the day. On the decor side, M had been very particular about how the background would look for the ceremony and it showed, every corner of the setup felt thought through.
As a documentary family photographer working across Bangalore and Delhi NCR/ Gurugram, I always try to catch the story happening around the main rituals without losing focus on the rituals themselves. Whether it is a housewarming ceremony, an anniversary or any other family gathering, this way of shooting usually brings out the best photos of the day.
