Grihapravesham Photography in Bangalore - A Traditional Iyengar Housewarming
Photographing Traditional Indian events across Bangalore and Delhi NCR
This young couple had seen my work and connected with my style of photography, so the booking for their Grihapravesham in Bangalore happened almost immediately.
On the day, their new home was filled with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family – everyone there to bless the couple as they began life in their new home.
A Traditional Iyengar Grihapravesham
The housewarming followed traditional Iyengar customs, with Lakshmi-Hayagreevar as the main deity.
The ceremony began with the Dwar Pooja, followed by Swati & Aadi entering their new home carrying the deities. A brass cow and calf accompanied them, symbolising the traditional practice of a cow and her calf entering the house.
Inside, the rituals continued with the various homas and poojas, followed by the boiling of milk, Poornahuti and finally, Drishti.
For a Grihapravesham photographer, understanding the flow of these rituals is useful. It helps me anticipate important moments, find the right position and photograph the ceremony without interrupting it.
A Beautiful Homa Backdrop
The decor was beautifully planned, particularly the backdrop behind the homa.
This is something I recommend to clients planning a Grihapravesham or housewarming ceremony. Since much of the ceremony takes place around the homa, a thoughtfully designed backdrop makes a big difference to the photographs.
It need not be elaborate. A clean, well-planned space helps both candid photographs and posed family portraits look more put together, while keeping the focus on the people and the ceremony.
A Ceremony Filled With Laughter
Despite the many traditional rituals, this Grihapravesham was anything but serious. The ceremony was generously peppered with laughter, conversations and jokes between the couple and their family.
It made for some wonderful candid Grihapravesham photography.
While photographing the main rituals, I am always watching what is happening around them as well.
A great-grandmother playfully holding the hand of her great-granddaughter. The couple cracking a joke in the middle of the ceremony. An older couple sitting together in conversation - perhaps just chatting, perhaps reminiscing about their own journey and how quickly the years have passed.
These are moments that happen quietly and disappear just as quickly.
My approach to candid event photography is to keep looking for them - moving around unobtrusively and trying to be at the right place at the right time. Almost like a ninja photographer!
When you are hosting your own housewarming, you naturally cannot see everything happening around you. Some of these photographs therefore become moments you discover only afterwards.
