Some of the best baby photographs come from simply letting a child be.
For this at-home baby photoshoot in Bangalore, I photographed a nine-month-old with his young family in the space he knows best, his own home.
There was no elaborate setup or rigid sequence of photographs. This was lifestyle family photography, documenting the baby, his family and the little interactions that make this age so special.
From Grandma to Mom and Dad
We started with the baby playing with his grandmother and then moved on to moments with Mom and Dad. He played, explored, smiled and eventually got cranky too.
And we photographed all of it.
For me, candid baby photography is not only about big smiles. The curious expressions, playfulness, comfort in a grandparent's arms and even the occasional grumpy face are part of the story.
These everyday moments often become timeless memories as children grow older.
Photographing a Baby at Home
One of the biggest advantages of an at-home baby photoshoot is that the child remains in familiar surroundings.
We photographed in different parts of the house, including the living room and the baby's nursery. Familiar spaces, toys and people helped him stay comfortable while also giving the photographs a personal context.
Years later, a photograph in the nursery can bring back memories not only of how small your baby was, but also of the room and home where those early months were spent.
We also stepped outdoors for a short part of the session. This gave us a change of setting, natural light and some variety while keeping the overall shoot relaxed.
Candid Photographs and Family Portraits
While the session was primarily lifestyle family photography in Bangalore, we rounded it off with a few posed portraits.
We photographed the baby with Mom and Dad, as well as with his grandparents. Photographs across generations are important to me. These are often the images that get printed, framed and eventually find a place on the walls of a family home.
A baby and family photoshoot can have room for both. Candid photographs preserve everyday interactions, while a few thoughtfully composed portraits document everyone together.
