I'm Shambhavi Kartik, I've been photographing family events for over 10 years. I work with families in Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, covering everything from housewarming ceremonies to other important family milestones.

I am now based in Bangalore, and I continue to bring this same documentary style approach to family events here, alongside my ongoing work across Delhi NCR and Gurugram.

Family events usually happen fast and don't last long. That's what makes them fun to shoot, I have to stay alert from the very first moment and get good photos within a short window of time. I try to keep things simple. Instead of pausing the event to set up every single shot, I stay close to what's actually happening around me.

There's a lot going on at once, rituals, guests, food, conversations. I try to catch the small, real moments happening alongside the bigger ones, so that even with everything moving quickly, the photos still feel personal to your family.

Whether the event is indoors or outdoors, my goal is the same: capture the day as it really happened. From a griha pravesham to a half-saree ceremony, a seemantham (baby shower) to an ayushya homam, I shoot each event based on what feels right for your family.

Most families want more than just formal, posed pictures from a big day. They want photos that hold onto how the day actually felt, the rituals, the laughter, the small moments shared between family members. As a documentary-style photographer, I cover many traditional Hindu ceremonies, including seemantham, namkaran, mundan, ayushya homam, griha pravesham, shashtiabdhapoorthi, sadhabhishekam, half-saree functions, Annaprashan and rice ceremonies, and other family milestones. Every event is shaped around how your family wants to celebrate, and captured in a way that stays true to the day.

A had her Annaprashan or Mukhe Bhaat (literal meaning – rice in your mouth, also known as the Bengali rice ceremony) sometime back and I had got the chance to photograph the event.

Shashtiabdhapoorthi (60th Birthday) Celebration Photoshoot in Delhi: A Doctor Couple's Story

I got the wonderful opportunity to document the very traditional and beautiful Shasthiabdhapoorthi (60th birthday celebrations) of our family doctor a few months back.

Shashtiabdhapoorthi is a Sanskrit name for a special ceremony on a person's sixtieth birthday. Shashtiabdhapoorti is celebrated on completion of 60 years of age of a person. This term is derived from Sanskrit in which Shashti means sixty; Abda–year; Poorthi-completion.

Spanning 2 days, the event was held at Sri Sarada Vidya Kendra in Delhi. Their children and other relatives flew in from across the world to celebrate this big milestone function.

50th wedding anniversary celebration, Gurgaon (Gurugram)

It was a surprise anniversary party planned by Gurpreet & Roopa for their parents. The surprise and shock on aunty’s face was so evident. For a moment, I felt like just keeping my camera down and savouring the moment. And I couldn’t, for the fear of missing this beautiful moment for the family. Cons of being a photographer, eh?
