A few months back, I got to document something really special, the Shashtiabdhapoorthi, or 60th birthday celebration of our family doctor. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful, tradition-rich events I've had the chance to be part of.
For those unfamiliar with the term, Shashtiabdhapoorthi is a Sanskrit word for the ceremony marking a person's sixtieth birthday. Shashti means sixty, Abda means year and Poorthi means completion, so together it stands for completing sixty years of life.
The celebration ran across two full days and was hosted at Sri Sarada Vidya Kendra in Delhi. Children and relatives of the couple travelled in from different corners of the world to be part of this big milestone and having the whole family together like that gave the entire event such a warm, close-knit feeling.
What stayed with me most was how composed Dr. Rajam and Dr. Ramachandran remained through it all. Tamil-Brahmin ceremonies tend to be elaborate, with rituals following one right after the other, but the couple moved through each one with such ease. Dr. Rajam looked radiant in her Kanjeevaram sarees across both days and Dr. Ramachandran carried his usual calm, quiet presence throughout.
As a documentary family photographer, my focus over the two days was on capturing both the traditional rituals and everything unfolding around them, relatives reuniting after years apart, small private moments between the couple and little details in the decor and customs that made this celebration uniquely theirs.
This album is full of favourites, so narrowing it down for this blog was genuinely tough. So bear with me for this longer set.
