This Gurudwara wedding in Delhi is special to me because the groom is a dear former colleague. He and his fiancée trusted my team to provide photography & videography services for their Sangeet, Anand Karaj and Reception. I was present, both professionally and personally!
The Sangeet had all the energy you expect from a Punjabi celebration, with music, dancing and families fully involved. The Anand Karaj had a very different pace. It was my first time photographing this ceremony inside a Gurudwara, and I remember being struck by its dignity and stillness.
As the shabad kirtan played through the hall, the couple sat before the Guru Granth Sahib, surrounded by their families. I photographed the laavan, the rituals, the family members watching closely and the small interactions that happened in between. This is where my candid and documentary approach matters most - not only recording the main rituals, but also noticing the people, reactions and relationships around them.
The celebrations, thereafter, continued with the reception and ended with an emotional vidai. From the energy of the Sangeet to the sacredness of the Anand Karaj and the warmth of the reception, this event stayed with me.
Having photographed Anand Karaj ceremonies and Gurudwara weddings in Delhi NCR, I am now bringing the same experience and documentary approach to Sikh weddings in Bangalore as well.
