Candid photography for a sikh wedding in Delhi/ NCR
For this Gurudwara wedding in Delhi, I was brought in as a specialist candid and documentary photographer. The brief was clear. The family wanted photographs that went beyond standard ritual coverage and captured the people, reactions and smaller moments around the Anand Karaj ceremony.
The coverage began with the groom getting ready and his entry into the Gurudwara. Since I was entering the space as an outside photographer, it was important to make the groom and his family comfortable with my presence. Candid photography works best when people are not constantly aware of the camera.
Through the ceremony, I photographed the laavan, the family members watching closely and the details that made the day personal. Some of my favourite frames included kajal being applied to the groom, his nephew looking bored in the middle of all the activity and the bride’s father getting emotional after the pheras concluded.
This is what I enjoy about photographing Sikh ceremonies. The range of moments is wide. There is ritual, family, humour, emotion and movement, all happening within the same space.
My objective is not just to create pretty pictures. The aim is to make photographs that bring the family back to that day even years later.
The final portrait of the couple became the icing on the cake. I photographed them while some of their elderly relatives walked out of the frame, which made the frame feel connected to the larger family story.
Having photographed Anand Karaj ceremonies and Gurudwara weddings in Delhi NCR, I am now bringing the same experience and documentary approach to Sikh weddings in Bangalore as well.
